Synopsis:
Elna works her way through college by baby-sitting and dish-washing. When handsome Jim asks Elna on a date, she borrows a dress from her roommate Patty. Patty works as a paid escort (“strictly on the level…no funny business”). To afford new clothes, Elna signs up as well. Jim and Elna become engaged, but she can’t quit her job or tell Jim or she'll break her contract. Victor blackmails Elna into dating him, and jealous Janet exposes them to Jim. Jim is angry to learn Elna is a “party girl,” but when a tearful Elna dashes into traffic and is nearly killed, Jim realizes he still loves her.
Denise and her dance partner Maurice are working in Las Vegas. Denise falls in love with Rick but Maurice won’t release her from her contract. When she says she’s leaving anyway, Maurice tricks Rick by showing him a phony marriage license indicating Maurice and Denise are married. Rick vanishes. Maurice deliberately sprains Denise’s ankle and hires a new partner. Rick returns and Maurice confesses his scheme. Denise and Rick can now be married.
Melissa's friend Beth sets her up on a date with Kirk. Beth turns down Kirk’s marriage proposal and falls in love with Ty. When Beth’s husband Jim has a heart attack, Beth confesses to Melissa: Beth and Kirk are having an affair, and the shock of her infidelity might kill Jim. Melissa agrees to pretend to be engaged to Kirk for Jim's sake. Melissa finds Kirk’s body and thinks a jealous Ty killed him. She tells Ty about her false engagement. Kirk died after an altercation with another woman’s husband. Ty and Melissa reconcile and Beth promises to be “a model wife” to Jim from now on.
Bob asks architect Jeri to design a house that he and his fiancée Bette can live in after their wedding. Jeri, who is attracted to Bob, refuses but changes her mind when she meets Bette. Feeling Bette isn’t a good match for Bob, Jeri accepts the job after all. Jeri and Bob work together and create a “dream house.” Bette doesn’t like the house and Bob breaks up with her. He’ll marry Jeri and they’ll move in to the new house.
